What? why?…is my logo.
At the start of my college education it dawned on me “one day I’m going to need a personal logo!” Original thought? Not in the slightest, so I started off like any naive designer and used my “very original” initials. So comes the second rendition, an industrial, abstraction of AG. I was happy with the interpretation of one shape could be read as both an A and a G just from a change of perspective. But, it still felt cold. Looking at it now feels like it was made by an alien who really liked EDM. In an effort to make a more approachable logo mark, I turned to what I thought was the friendliest typeface, Avenir. Taking a lesson from my first studio class I took all the excess away making each form as high contrast as possible while retaining legibility. Later refined in 2020 curving all ends and unifying the thicknesses. This made it cohesive, playful, and easily recognizable. I was finally happy with this. Yes, finally! I was going to let it go.
But, what did this AG mean? Its still my unoriginal initials, even my father’s initials are AG, what makes this different? Not much in end it turns out. I needed to pivot to a mark that was undeniably me. Conveniently there was already something people associated with me…
This was something I drew on every notebook I owned as a kid. I can only imagine as a kid all I wanted to do was leave wherever I was.
When started college my friends became to notice it, they’d see it written on a desk or on a whiteboard and recognize it as me. A personal tag. This only encouraged me to use it more, and what better place than my own body!
In two separate tattoos, the brackets were immortalized on my body “TAKE ME HOME” 2015 and “LACUNA” 2021.
